Life doesn’t get much more idyllic than relaxing for an afternoon at CocoMaya on Virgin Gorda. A white sandy beach, expertly mixed cocktails and a killer sushi menu – once you step foot into this little slide of paradise, you won’t want to leave. Perfectly positioned on the way from the main ferry dock to the famous Virgin Gorda Baths, it’s one of the most breath-taking spots for lunch on the island.
As with many BVI hideaways, on approaching from the main road, this beachfront restaurant doesn’t look much, and you might be hard pushed to find it without directions. Behind the low key entrance, a stylish, open air restaurant and cocktail bar leads through to the whitest of white, sandy beach.
A chunky wooden bar with two, giant swing seats gives the option of cocktails in the sun or shade, and the comfy, orange sofas arranged in groups on the beach are just as tempting. There is no escaping the vibe at CocoMaya – luxurious and relaxing.
The friendly and knowledgable bar staff can help guide you through a seasonal cocktail list, or you can choose from a good beer and wine list.
If sipping on rose, looking out at the turquoise sea isn’t enough, prepare for the sushi offering to take your lunch or dinner to another level. The tempura shrimp rice rolls were incredible, served with a delicious apple salsa and spicy mayo, and the famous CocoMaya rice roll lived up to expectation.
The only issue, and this applies only to non-island residents or holiday makers, is having to tear yourself away at then end of the day to catch the ferry back to Tortola, but it all adds to the charm of this hidden destination, and simply leaves you wanting more.
