Brunch with Badger & Co.

A delightful new food & drink spot has opened up on Castle Street, right in the heart of Edinburgh’s city centre.

Badger & co signBadger & Co. has taken up residence in childhood home of Kenneth Grahame, the author of the children’s classic ‘The Wind in the Willows’. A self-confessed bookworm and lover of classic novels it wasn’t open for long before I went to check it out… (Plus, if you do cocktails and brunch you’ve often got my vote!)

The Wind in the WillowsOn entering you can go left to bar, or right to the restaurant. My first thought… the interiors are a delight! I love a good light fitting, and this place is packed with them.   It’s bright and airy, and the vibrant blue chairs give give the chesterfield style sofas a girly touch. There is no mistaking the trendy (no doubt F&B inspired) ‘elephant’s breath’ paint colour on the walls, it gives the grand front room a modern feel.

It featured home comforts such as ‘Beans On Toast’ made with house baked beans, and homemade Badger & Co. granola. The stand out ingredient was the use of duck eggs across the menu, a nice touch, and ‘Doorstop Toast’ has a distinctly homey sound to it! The vibe here? Get comfortable.

We opted for the ‘Smoked Salmon Crumpets’ and ‘The Full Set’. There was a lot more eating in the crumpets than I first thought. They were topped with a good helping of nicely seasoned, scrambled duck eggs (I would have had them slightly runnier at home, but that’s just me) with Scottish smoked salmon, and there was plenty of melted butter on the crumpets. The sausages were the highlight of the fry-up, and the home baked beans were a tasty addition. I admit I was hoping huge, chunky pieces of bread for the ‘Doorstop Toast’, but it was all wolfed down and enjoyed nonetheless.

They also offer a lunch and dinner menu, and have a private dining room ‘deep in the heart of wild woods’ (aka downstairs), supposedly where Badger really resides! On my way to the bathroom I spotted a cute outdoor area – the perfect place to chill, alongside the river banks of course, on a sunny afternoon.

Badger & Co bathroomsA quick browse of the cocktail menu confirmed I will need to return with my girlfriends one evening… I imagine when you are sipping on a ‘Pimms in the Willows‘ or a ‘Picnic on the Banks“it’s not the sort of night for bed, anyhow”
